Brennan’s of Houston: Where Creole Met Texas and Stayed

Some restaurants chase trends; Brennan’s outlived them all. Since 1967 this Midtown grande dame has served turtle soup, seafood gumbo and flaming Bananas Foster to generations of Houstonians, translating New Orleans elegance into a Texas accent so convincingly the city claims it as its own.

The History

Brennan’s opened as the sister restaurant to New Orleans’ legendary Commander’s Palace, housed in a graceful Vieux Carré-style building designed by architect John Staub. The kitchen coined its own dialect — “Texas Creole” — folding Gulf shrimp, local game and Texas swagger into Louisiana’s classic canon. Fires, floods and decades have come and gone; the courtyard, the hospitality and the sherry-laced turtle soup remain.

What to Order

Begin with the snapping turtle soup, finished tableside with a pour of sherry — it has anchored the menu for over half a century. The Haute Creole seafood gumbo and shrimp remoulade carry the New Orleans line; pecan-crusted Gulf fish speaks fluent Texas. Dessert is non-negotiable: Bananas Foster, flambéed beside your table with Caribbean rum and cinnamon sparks, a ritual invented by the Brennan family and perfected here nightly.

The Space

White tablecloths, warm brick, and a courtyard that might be the most romantic outdoor room in Houston. The New Orleans-style patio drips with greenery, the dining rooms glow with old-world polish, and jazz floats through the beloved weekend brunch.

Who It’s For

Anniversaries, proposals, milestone birthdays and business deals that deserve linen. Also brunch devotees — the jazz brunch here is a Houston institution in its own right.

Good to Know

Do I need a reservation? Yes — especially for weekend brunch and holiday dinners, which book well ahead.

Is there a dress code? Business casual reads right; jackets are common but not required. It is a dress-up occasion by choice.

What is the jazz brunch? A weekend tradition with live musicians strolling the rooms while classic Creole brunch dishes and cocktails circulate.

Is the Bananas Foster really made tableside? Yes — flamed on a cart beside you, one of the great pieces of dinner theater in the city.

Can they host private events? Beautifully — private rooms and the courtyard handle everything from rehearsal dinners to corporate nights.
