Taste Kitchen + Bar: Brunch Seven Days a Week
Most cities ration brunch to weekends; this downtown Houston hotspot made it a daily right. Taste Kitchen + Bar serves chef Don Bowie’s Southern scratch cooking — nine riffs on chicken and waffles among them — every day of the week, in a multi-level room where the cocktails work as hard as the kitchen.
The Concept
Bowie grew up the son of two chefs steeped in Cajun and Southern cooking, then sharpened his palate in New York and Los Angeles before bringing the formula home. His downtown outpost takes the comfort food of his childhood and dresses it for a night on the town: scratch-made everything, globally inflected seasoning, and a craft-cocktail program born of his coastal years.
What to Order
Chicken and waffles is the franchise — pick your fighter from Nashville hot to smothered in gravy. The Taste of Soul plate assembles smothered chicken, braised collard greens, candied yams and rice with gravy into a Sunday dinner that ignores the calendar. Jerk lamb chops bring Caribbean heat, the mac and cheese wanders the globe in the best way, and the cocktail list rewards exploration from the first round.
The Space
Three levels of dining and two full bars stacked in a historic downtown building, with a street-side patio for people-watching and cozier corners upstairs for groups. The energy climbs with the hour — brunch hums, dinner buzzes, weekends properly swing.
Who It’s For
Brunch crews who refuse to wait for Saturday, downtown workers celebrating anything, pre-game and pre-show diners, and visitors who want modern Southern cooking with a pulse.
Good to Know
Do I need a reservation? On weekends and event nights, yes — the room fills fast; weekday brunch is the easy window.
Is brunch really served daily? Yes — the brunch menu runs seven days a week, a rarity even in a brunch-mad city.
How spicy is the Nashville hot chicken? Assertive but survivable — ask the kitchen to calibrate if you are heat-shy.
Can it host a private party? Yes — the upper floors and semi-private spaces handle birthdays and corporate groups regularly.
Are there vegetarian options? A solid handful — waffles, salads, sides and meat-free plates cover the bases.

The drink was small but fairly strong, about $20. The food was mediocre at best. The best dish on the plate was the cornbread waffle. And it really wasn't even that tasty. My chicken had to be swapped, because it wasn't…
