Aquarium Restaurant: Dinner at the Bottom of the Sea
Plenty of Houston restaurants sell a view; only one wraps it all the way around your table. At the Aquarium Restaurant downtown, the dining room circles a floor-to-ceiling 150,000-gallon tank where sharks, rays and moray eels glide past mid-conversation — an ordinary weeknight dinner turned into the kind of evening kids retell for weeks.
The Concept
The restaurant is the centerpiece of the Downtown Aquarium, an entertainment complex from Houston-based Landry’s that stacks marine exhibits, carnival rides and games around the dining room. The glowing cylinder at the center houses more than a hundred species from around the world — reticulated rays, giant grouper, a rare Napoleon wrasse from Australia — and divers regularly slip into the water for feedings while guests watch from their booths.
What to Order
The kitchen plays confident crowd-pleaser: seafood platters piled with stuffed shrimp, stuffed crab and sea scallops, grilled snapper, Cajun-spiced pastas and a shrimp-and-crab dip to start. Fried alligator is the table dare that usually wins converts — tender under its crisp crust — while steaks, quesadillas and burgers cover anyone keeping to dry land. The kids’ menu is genuinely good, which matters in a room where half the tables have booster seats.
The Space
Booths and tables rise in tiers around the tank so there is no bad seat, though tank-side spots go first — call ahead if you want your elbow on the glass. Blue light ripples across the ceiling, and the soundtrack is equal parts bubbles and delighted gasps. Afterward, the complex tempts with a train ride through a shark tunnel and a Ferris wheel spinning above downtown.
Who It’s For
Families first and foremost, plus birthday crews, out-of-town guests and anyone still on speaking terms with their inner eight-year-old. Couples seeking hushed romance should aim elsewhere — wonder here comes with a side of happy noise.
Good to Know
Do I need a reservation? Weekends and school holidays book out; reserve online and request tank-side seating in the notes.
Do I have to buy aquarium admission to eat? No — the restaurant welcomes diners without an exhibit ticket, though many combine the two.
Is there a kids’ menu? Yes, a full one, plus high chairs and enough swimming distraction to defuse any toddler meltdown.
Can I watch feedings from my table? Divers enter the tank at scheduled times most days; ask your server when the next one is.
Is there a dress code? None — come as you are; this is family territory, not a jacket-required room.
