The Breakfast Klub: the Line Worth Standing In
Every city has one breakfast spot that outgrows the word “restaurant.” In Houston it is The Breakfast Klub, the Midtown institution where the morning queue wraps the building, strangers compare orders like old friends, and two dishes — wings and waffles, catfish and grits — have become civic shorthand for a proper start to the day.
The Story
Native Houstonian Marcus Davis opened the doors in September 2001, betting there was a hole in the market for a soulful, sit-down breakfast served in a room that felt like community. He built the menu around two favorites from opposite coasts — “Wings & Waffle” and “Katfish & Grits” — and the city never looked back. Good Morning America, USA Today, Forbes and Esquire have all ranked it among the best breakfasts in the country, and Davis has grown into one of Houston’s most influential restaurateurs without moving the flagship an inch.
What to Order
The Wings & Waffle is the icon: an airy waffle under a snowfall of powdered sugar, flanked by crisp seasoned wings. Katfish & Grits answers with a huge cornmeal-crusted catfish fillet over buttery grits, eggs on the side. Beyond the big two, biscuits, pancakes and honest coffee round out a menu that refuses to overcomplicate anything — the point is soul, not spectacle.
The Space
Warm, loud and unpretentious: local art on the walls, gospel and R&B in the air, long communal energy even at separate tables. Order at the counter, grab your number, and let the room do its thing — half of Houston seems to pass through on a Saturday.
Who It’s For
Breakfast believers, first-time visitors working through a Houston bucket list, families after church, and anyone who thinks a queue is just seasoning for the meal to come.
Good to Know
How bad is the line, really? Weekends can mean a block-long wait, but it moves fast; weekdays mid-morning are far gentler.
Can I book a table? No — it is counter-service and first come, first served; the line is part of the ritual.
Is it breakfast only? Breakfast is served all day alongside lunch plates, so the waffle is never off-limits.
Anything for kids? Yes — pancakes, smaller plates and a room where no one minds a little noise.
Does it work for takeout? Absolutely — to-go orders are routine, though the waffle deserves to be eaten within minutes.
