At first glance, it may seem that this comedy genre, often using so-called swear words, has only become known in the twenty-first century. But in fact, the history of stand-up goes back a long time, but of course, it was in a very different form. Evidence shows that style icons and idols for millions of people in the United States have become such personalities as Woody Allen, Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, George Carlin and Whoopi Goldberg. Some of these names are known not only through stand-up but also from the world of cinema, for humor and cinematography always walk side by side.
In its time, the city of Houston gave the world a young man who had something to show off as well. Furthermore, he is no laggard in the cohort of prominent standup comedians, with his name known far beyond the borders of the United States.
ALI SIDDIQ. A TOUGH CHILDHOOD
The hero of our story was born in 1973. This name may come as a revelation to some, but this gentleman does not need to be announced a second time in certain circles, for he is already perfectly known as an orator and writer.
Behind the mask of a cheerful young man, which the audience is used to seeing, the difficult early years of life are hidden. Ali’s childhood was not an easy one, but despite its hardships, the man gives humanity a positive outlook.
The mother was in charge of the children’s upbringing due to her divorce from their father. Subsequently, other relatives took over custody of the children. The dark-skinned young man likely fell under the influence of the streets. As time passed, Ali didn’t notice how he started selling drugs, for which, before long, at the age of 19, he was put behind bars. But who would have thought that this particular moment in the young man’s life would be a turning point in his life?
The court sentenced the young man to fifteen years, of which Ali served six. It was the prison walls that became the novice comedian’s first listeners. While serving his sentence in a prison laundry, he discovered his ability to delight the public with his jokes, which later developed into something more.
THE FREEDOM AND THE FIRST STEPS
Ali was released from prison in 1997. The first thing off the bat, he took his first steps in the field of stand-up comedy. Despite his prison background, the comedian soon started fulfilling his plans, which were born back in prison.
That was at a local Houston café, Just Joking Comedy, where Ali first took to the amateur stage with a stand-up routine that mainly drew student audiences. The first try was bound to be a washout, not because of the quality of the performance but because of his appearance. The comedian went on stage in a suit. A few weeks later, Ali’s style was drastically changed and our hero became a co-host of the show in the same café.
For the first time, the comedian appeared in the TV series Def Comedy Jam on the world-famous HBO channel at the age of 32. Five years later, Comedy Central labeled the man No. 1 in his field.
It’s impossible not to highlight 2017 in Ali’s career when the actor released the first of his own partly self-biographical film, Ali Siddiq: It’s Bigger Than These Bars. The film’s events are not difficult to guess. The man did not stop there and made five more comedy albums.
Another notable event in the comedian’s life occurred in 2019 when the man became a finalist on NBC’s comedy competition series, Bring the Funny.
He is engaged in volunteering and has repeatedly performed both in Houston and outside his hometown at charity concerts. The years 2017 and 2018 were especially memorable. The comedian was among those who organized the show to raise funds for those affected by Hurricane Harvey and the earthquake in Pakistan in 2005.
So, we can state that our hero has found his vocation in this life, even though somebody in his youth has given up on his future. Perhaps this story will teach us not to give up, no matter how difficult it may be today. Even if the future seems hazy, we should still leave room for optimism.
