We are going to embark on a voyage back in time, to a time when music was very different, but what can we say about a rare genre like country? It is not particularly common even in the twenty-first century, but our heroine was able to use it at a certain moment to become well-known across the entire country.
COUNTRY STYLE
A musical style and direction in music based on dance motifs that emerged among the rural population of the Southern and Western United States. There is also a belief that this music was brought to America by European immigrants.
Until the 1940s, this style was known as hillbilly, and it is distinguished by musical instruments such as guitar, mandolin, fiddle violin, banjo and harmonica.
Elvis Presley and the Eagles were notable performers who performed their works in the country style, though not utterly.
BARBARA MANDRELL
The heroine of our story, the future star and legend of American country music, Barbara Ann Mandrell, was born on December 25, 1948, in downtown Houston.
The girl’s family was artistic, so she followed their example. Barbara’s talent started to become apparent at the young age of five. Our heroine has since mastered accordion and sheet music playing. At the age of nine, there was the first big indication of the girl’s brilliant artistic destiny. At this young age, the girl had mastered the slide guitar. During one of her performances at the Chicago exhibition, Joe Maphis, a well-known figure in the music industry, was impressed and invited Barbara to perform with him in nightclubs in Las Vegas. Already in 1961, the young artist had her NBC-TV debut in the series called “Five Star Jubilee.”
Barbara continued to gain artistic experience and learn new instruments, while simultaneously giving concerts in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and all this at the young age of 13. During this time, the young lady and her family formed the Mandrell Family Band. By the way, the young lady subsequently married drummer Ken Dundee.
THE CHILDHOOD IS OVER
With the help of her father, in 1969 the singer managed to sign her first professional contract with Columbia Records. Barbara moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where she began recording her first professional hits with the aforementioned studio.
Among the early hits, critics especially highlighted the song “The Midnight Oil,” in which the woman sang about her own experience of being betrayed.
In 1975, she signed a contract with a new studio known as ABC/Dot and soon reaped the benefits of her decision.
Song after song, year after year, the singer’s name began to emerge in numerous charts, with one of the songs even reaching the top of a pop chart.
It will be difficult to list all the awards that Barbara received, but it is essential to highlight one.
At the age of 32, the artist won the “Entertainer of the Year” award from the Country Music Association. A year later, lightning struck the same place for the second time.
In 1984, the artist got into a terrible accident, following which she underwent extensive recovery and returned to showbiz. Nevertheless, in 1997, she decided to “hang up the microphone.”
We should not dismiss our heroine’s achievements in the field of cinematography, for she achieved tremendous success there as well.
So it appears that the people of Houston have yet another reason to be honored and proud of the famous singer, who undoubtedly has a special place in music history.
