17-block Houston Theater District

According to reliable and convincing statistics, Houston receives tons of thousands of tourists every year. In addition to individuals who visit it to explore something new, there are other city guests who arrive here for business or family matters. Other statistics report that up to two million citizens travel each year through Houston. There is no doubt that Houstonians are very proud of this area. Well, not surprisingly.

Next, we will discuss the city district, which can be confidently associated with the hub of creativity, not just in Texas and the USA, but across the globe. Spiritual life is always in full swing in this place, and numerous onlookers are confirmation of the above statement.

Looking ahead, it should be noted that this city is worth visiting if fate grants you such an opportunity. These 17 blocks will be a pleasant dessert in the dish of impressions called “Tourist Houston”. Houston Trend will give you more details about it.

Theater District

There are 17 blocks in the city center, traveling through which you can come across nine, or even more, creative institutions and performing arts organizations. Bayou Place is a leader among other venues regarding its popularity. The building occupies an area of about 12 thousand square meters and seems to be the epicenter of the Theater District. Numerous restaurants, cinemas, various creative spaces and many other artistic areas catch the eye.

Combining all concert and theatrical halls in the district, the total number of spectator seats will reach about 20,000, and cinemas have up to 1,500 seats for watching films. To finish the initial acquaintance with the district, it should be added that this place is one of five in the United States where all kinds of creative and artistic activities are presented.

Details and Figures

In addition to the aforementioned Bayou Place, 17 blocks also include other well-known buildings to the locals, such as the Houston Grand Opera, the Houston Symphony Orchestra, Houston Ballet, Theatre Under The Stars, The Alley Theatre, and, of course, the Wortham Theater Center and Cullen Theater, Sarofim and Zilkha Halls, Brown Theater and others.

During its interesting and rich history, there were many prominent performers who amused the local public with their visits. There were such legends as The Rolling Stones, Cirque du Soleil and many other globally famous bands and artists. It’s easy to guess that we cannot list all the countless visitors, including amateurs and professionals, so let’s introduce ourselves with another tourist gem of the city.

Among all art objects, the Houston Grand Opera deserves special attention, as it has something unique that other theaters in the US cannot boast of. It entered the chronicle of the creative life as the only Grammy-winning opera in the country. Tony and Emmy awards were granted soon after.

The old theater of the district, The Alley Theatre, is hard to avoid. Its history has been stretching, or rather, flying since 1947. This theater can confidently state:

“I am the oldest among my counterparts from Texas”

Moreover, this venue takes third place among the oldest operating theatres in the United States.

Historical sources note that the first residents of the 17-block area were Sam Houston Coliseum and Houston Music Hall, which were later joined by the above-mentioned theaters.

Lastly, it is worth adding that it is not only the center of the theatrical and artistic life of Texas. Here, everyone can find a recreation to their liking. Restaurants, bars, live music, cafes, fast food, film theaters, and all kinds of entertainment working 24/7 are always available to connoisseurs of the beautiful world of art and not only.

Who knows, maybe one day this district will be included in the list of wonders of the world, because this is really the case of which they say:

“A picture is worth a thousand words”.
