His father was Muslim and his mother professed the Christian religion. He grew up in a strict family and was the oldest of four siblings. Hakeem’s family relocated to Houston when he was 4 years old.

In his teenage years, Seriki held multiple jobs to help his family. He worked at a temping agency, transported blood and urine for a medical lab, distributed leaflets and promoted clubs. After the divorce of his parents, Seriki settled in Acres Homes, a neighborhood in Houston, where he attended Jersey Village High School. It was there that he took an interest in rap, but his parents were against it.

RAP CAREER

Despite his family’s disapproval, Seriki and his friend Paul Wall engaged in rapping. Once, they got acquainted with a mixtape DJ Michael “5000” Watts, who owned the Swishahouse label. He invited the boys to rap on his radio show on station KBXX-FM.

Their performance immediately caught the attention of locals. Soon, Seriki and Wall released a tape of their recordings and joined Swishahouse on a regular basis. It was then that Seriki adopted the stage name Chamillionaire (combination of “chameleon” and “millionaire” words). The nickname represents his ability to adapt and change in the music industry, just like a chameleon, as well as his pursuit of financial prosperity.

He, along with Wall, formed the group The Color Changin’ Click. In 2002, they created the album Get Ya Mind Correct, which sold 150,000 copies. The musicians performed at the SXSW music festival two years later.

In 2005, Hakeem recorded his debut album, The Sound of Revenge, which reached 10th position on the Billboard 200 chart and was commercially successful, achieving platinum status. Thanks to hits such as “Turn It Up” and “Grown and Sexy,” Chamillionaire cemented himself in the rap industry.

His legendary single “Ridin'” (2005) topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart, while the music video for the song was awarded “Best Rap Video” at the VMAs in 2006. A year later, the rapper won one of the most prestigious awards in modern music, a Grammy for Best Rap Performance.

“Ridin'” is Chamillionaire’s biggest hit and most well-known song. The track became an anthem for many music lovers thanks to its catchy melody and lyrics. In fact, when writing this song, the Houston native had no intention of making a hit. He mentioned that he was just trying to create something that would draw attention.

In 2006, the musician released Mixtape Messiah 2. Mixtape Messiah 3 and Ultimate Victory came out in 2007 and Mixtape Messiah 4 in 2008. Ultimate Victory was different from other rap albums because it was completely devoided of obscenities. The mixtape Major Pain came out in 2010. The first song “The Main Event ” was free to download on iTunes on the occasion of the NBA All-Star Game in Dallas.

Hakeem did not release his third album, Venom, because he left Universal Records in 2011. There are almost no limits, from customized dashboard layout to adjustable seat configurations.
